‘Pinched’ and 3 others by Ken Kakareka

PINCHED

Any time
is as good
as any
to write
a poem.
Even 2 mins.
be4 class
when you’re
pinched
for time
and your student
walks in
unaware of
the fact
that you
just wrote
a poem
about hemorrhoids.
His dumb face
screams
spoiled rotten
in one of
many
private academies.
He is
one of
the reasons
you have
hemorrhoids
among others
that you
won’t even
begin
to discuss.

pick your nose

why is it
that inside
a car
is such
a safe space
to pick
your nose?
nobody knows.
you should
see me
go to town,
roll em up
and flick
those fuckers
out the window
at other cars.
man,
have i seen
some other fuckers
go to town
when i pull up
at a red light.
dude
next to me
has his finger
shoved
so far up there
you’d think
it’d been centuries
since
his last pick.
we’re all
doing it.
there’s
nothing
to be
ashamed of.

only write

some food
and drink
just hit different
on a rainy day
like this
black coffee
and bag
of doritos.
this little girl
who doesn’t
speak english
is looking
at me
funny
while i try
to teach her.
i’m glad
i haven’t
made it
as a full-time
writer
and never will.
that’s when
you turn
to dust,
toast,
crumbs
in this bag.
ask oscar wilde
or john fante –
live an
unruly life
and work
other jobs.
writers
shouldn’t strive
to be writers.
only write.

poem #1

i’m testing out
an experimental way
of living
called
36
and no kids
until our time
comes.
i teach
night classes
from about
4 to 10
and after that
stay up
drinking tequila
and writing poems.
sometimes
i walk downtown
smoking cigarettes
or something
funnier.
3 am
usually sees
the last of me.
my wife’s
not a fan
of the experiment.
she works a 9-5
at a bank.
but it’s my
mid-life crisis!
i plead
you can do
the lip-filler thing
if you want to!
9 months,
she tells me.
9 months.
it’s month 1
and i think
this poem
might be
the first
in a series
called
poems
past midnight.
