2 poems by Salvatore Folisi

the warden

fear
over things only
imagined

so strong
i wake
in a panic

heart
throbbing
muscles tensed
sweating
can’t sleep
for hours
imagining unspeakable
horrors

imprisoned
like a
lab rat
in the
fortress
of my fate

not knowing
how to
escape
i try to
make
peace
with the warden

(negotiations
are ongoing)

some animals

some animals
appear only in dreams
partially hidden
in the woods
glimpsed momentarily
in ones periphery vision
as you drive away
wondering
what you saw
