the exquisite flower by Salvatore Folisi

the exquisite flower

incredible collusions,
a cacophony of cat calls

and barbed wire flows
across the arroyo in bulbous

thrusts that disrupt the crow
and the carrion.

the glinting sunshine on cactus
needles dripping precious shadows,

where piles of abandoned leather wallets
dry rot in the dust of memories

jettisoned overboard sinking ships
struggling for the shore.

the long stretch of skeletal
soil, inhabited by surreal insectile

creatures whose claws and shells
and teeth protrude against

roaming predators who arrive like
the wind to eat or

shit or burrow into a world
that fluctuates like the two sides

of the moon.
a planet that provides protection

for no one between mountain and
sea, the deadlands of scorched

rock where nomads flee the world
of man to die into the chaos and

calm of creation.
where once

a year the exquisite flower
blooms.
