BAIT by George Vincent

BAIT

Chemicals in my system
In my bait boxes for the rats
Blue Sapphire grain containing the active ingredient: RODIFICUME
Makes them bleed from the inside out
They go mad for water
And die in cold damp corners of takeaway basements
Surrounded by black pellets of their own shit
Stink like egg and chalk
Not long before the bluebottles pick them down to bone
Before I chuck them in a bag
Write my report, move onto the next job
Nicotine withers the blood vessels
The floaters behind my eyes
Dance in the sky like savages sucking dopamine smoke from sacred stars
Years of being poisoned
By the nitrate-gloved hand
Moving through the pipes
Gnawing through brick
Something grabs at me in the dark
Some evil master of this meagre reality
He has a bag and it’s filled like mine
