GENESIS: The Lost Verses
As told by Moses to Hardegon, his great-great-great-nephew on the mother’s side:
3.1 And out of these hellish and aleatory conditions arose the Progenitors who bootstrapped themselves out of the boiling inferno and—spearheaded by the French—cultivated a tongue for more than just digestion and oral hygiene.
3.2.1 And the tongue gave expression to a growing awareness, and the Progenitors—in their newfound wakefulness and mastery of advanced osculation—asked questions, such as: ‘How much is that doggy in the window?’
3.2.2 And the question begat an answer, which begat a follow-up question, ‘Will you take $49.95 and this Mickey Mouse watch?’
3.3 And the answers begat story, but the story caused confusion, and confusion often causes fear and, alas, fear can birth shame—such as when, after that hot date, you discovered a small piece of pan-seared salmon skin had been undulating on your upper lip all night.
3.4 And shame bred hatred which was caused by fear. Predictably, havoc was wreaked, and havoc brought about the need for protection—from my deranged neighbor and his creepy family with their uncoupled, unsynchronous chameleon eyes—and, in so doing, prompted the formation of the tribe.
3.5 And the tribe took ownership of land and chattel and also of Progenitors with physical strength inversely proportional to their mental acuity. Likewise, they took steps to possess people and things of great beauty—a bedazzled and bejeweled Liz Taylor as Cleopatra comes to mind—because, as it was individually proclaimed with righteous indignation, ‘Why not, I deserve it! and my lizard neighbor doesn’t know his ass from his elbow.’
3.6 And ownership proved highly addictive and intoxicating. It begat penal servitude to anyone who looked at a Progenitor’s stuff the wrong way, and said offenders were summarily rounded up and forced to watch the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
3.7 And from penal servitude, it is a small leap to gratuitous murder indeed—and murder was committed in the name of the sun, the moon, and the other heavenly deities and holy specters who, understandably, were partial to the taste and texture of healthy toddlers.
3.8 And soon evildoers were said to roam the Earth willy-nilly, unpunished and underdressed. But, alas, not everyone could agree on who the evildoers were. Some said Batman for his vigilante methods—others, the Joker—not only because of his nihilistic philosophy, but precisely due to his questioning the very notion of good and evil in a corrupt world.
3.9 And life was no longer for the living, and the body became a prison to escape. Thus, the gas oven, the shotgun, and rope suitable for hanging, were invented.
As this was told by Moses, so it was transcribed by Hardegon.
Amen! Amin! Sat Nam!
