The Sweet Earth Flying and 1 more by Damon Hubbs

The Sweet Earth Flying

The melancholy of making love
in Pisces season,
shores and ports, generational cleavage,
your weak spot of hoplite armor.
Light spent like Adonis
and the sweet earth flying.
I play Catan with a poet with extravagant antlers,
hold a conference with birds
watch horizons touch like death’s clean layout.
Some things require no explanation
like the melancholy of oranges in Milan—
San Babila and Pirelli, the typeface hemorrhage
of wartime posters,
the book with the honey-colored floorboards
and lesbians in Chengdu.
They pulled that beautiful boy from the Nile.
He was dictating verses to his soul,
ruptured lines like the drunk march
of Hellenistic elephants.

Higher Signatures

Of course there are backstories to the stories,
list poems, the Welsh coast as ling-di-long as Mia’s clavicle.
There’s lovely and who’s coat is that jacket,
fish tanks in council estates
and now that the auteur’s auteur is dead
what will we do
in the rabbit hutches of Hungary—

I like to go to bed with wet hair.
The dark prince knows the eye listens.
All this space inhabited
by the suspense of death.
No, don’t send a pigeon my way.
The cactus holds the future and I’m flicking off to Trisha.
Give little fly a token so she can ride the bumper cars.
