In a city-wide dragnet, police raided at least 10 seafood speakeasies in which customers have been free to buy and consume shellfish and other highly illegal, dangerous seafoods. More than 95 arrests were made and over 30,000 illicit clams collected from pockets and wallets in the course of the evening, but very little information was forthcoming from the tight-lipped patrons, who turned out to be represented by people from all walks of life, teachers, farmers, truck drivers, drifters, and even a local barber.
‘They just clammed right up,’ said Inspector Clarice Voy, the officer in charge of the South Peoria detail. ‘We weren’t able to get anything out of these two-timing mussel-suckers.’
Seafood has been banned since last October, when the government clammed up.
