THE VERMONT PAINTER (NEW BOSS PICTURES, RELEASE DATE APRIL 28TH 2023, PG-13) PORTRAYS THE ICONIC UNDERGROUND PAINTER ROB BOSS: WAS THE PEACELOVING ANIMAL AND NATURE LOVER IN FACT A STONE-FACED KILLER?
Do you think you can hold back the waterworks during the festival-circuit darling The Vermont Painter? Part biopic portraying the sensitive and peaceloving TV landscape painter Rob Boss, and part shoot-em-up splattergore bank heist, this upcoming doozy intentionally conflates the life of the iconic bushy-haired speed painter Boss and his public access TV program La Joie de Trees with his hotly rumored but ultimately disproven (or was it) connection to the 1996 St. Albans heist, in which more than $250,000 was removed from a Vermont First Mutual at gunpoint by two robbers, one of whom appeared to sport a Jew fro like Boss’s beneath his pantyhose disguise, in the course of which 2 guards were shot and one killed.
The film, which is a collage of TV backset scenes between Boss and greedy producers, recreations of episodes of La Joie de Trees, in which actor Wes Owen soothingly teaches painting (and convincingly recreates Boss’s tacky memoribilia art), with so-called flashbacks to the jarring, violent events that morning in St. Albans. It will frighten you, move you, and ultimately make you want more Coca-Cola, like any good movie should.
Interesting factoid: Boss’s actual connection to the St. Albans robbery was conclusively disproven when it was learned that he had died in 1994.
