PROMISE ADVENTURE
Growing up in the 70s & 80s
I thought I’d have to grapple
with the Bermuda Triangle
a lot more than I have, & the one
time I was actually in Bermuda,
they didn’t even try to capitalize
on their global position, like
with tourist kiosks, t-shirts,
kitschy shot glasses & magnets,
& I haven’t even mentioned
the ubiquitous & ominous
warnings for lava, space lasers,
twilight zones, jungle quicksand,
the rise of the machines—oh wait—
snakes amid archaeological ruins,
total thermonuclear annihilation,
or reversion to swordplay, whips,
little enchanted empathetic bears,
magical amulets, romance amid
international adventure or heck
even Amelia Earhart on an island
in the South Pacific, with her
flight jacket & aw shucks wave
& Howyadoing & Whereyabeen?
Just once I want theme music
to rise to a crescendo during
one of my classes, so I have to
grab my passports—yes multiple—
leather coat & fedora & rush off
to the waiting dodgy biplane
to save the world in a way
it didn’t yet know it needed.
