Doors
the doors in my life won’t close
this isn’t a metaphor
my office door at work
bangs off the frame
every time I try to close it
the bathroom door at home
needs a swift tug to latch
I installed it
so that’s explainable
every door I go through lately
needs forcibly shut by me
which seems like
the universe is telling me something
I wish I could believe that
I wish I could believe in something
are the gods speaking to me?
Don’t close off an opportunity
Stay open to the possibilities
it’s Autumn
and less humid
leaves are falling
and wood should be contracting
I wish I knew how to end this poem
I wish I knew where I was going with this
I wish I could believe in something
MODERN MORNING SOUNDS
birds chirp
whistle sing
scream and caw
fight wings and feet
clank on the metal mailbox
cubes shift
in the ice maker
The Ring causes cellphones
to buzz vibrate
on the coffee table
motion from the birds
Claiming the territorial rights
of the mailbox
a furry growl
the furnace
kicks a hiss
nails scrape on the hardwood
not-really-hardwood floor
one quick bark at the door
before four feet pounce
on the couch / booster seat
a stretch and peek
having learned the vibrating coffee table
means motion at the front door
The railyard, in the distance
Godzilla-like echoes
The sound that lets Tokyo know
Its imminent doom
a second bark flicks followed
closely by a quick shush
and some whispered admonishment
Everyone’s sleeping!
pre-awake flatulence
from one of the bedrooms
WHAT A WAY
When I turned the riding mower
to start a new line
allergens thrown up
and all around me
I spotted it
quite the porker for an insect
fat body with tiny wings
too small to really heft
its chunky ass into the air
it hovered just above the grass blades
One minute
you’re minding your own business
flapping your almost useless wings
moving your portly self
from one weed to another
and the next
metal blades
slice you apart
spit you out
a plastic chute
