‘Nostalgia’ by Bhanusree S. Kumar

NOSTALGIA

When I reported bouts of fatigue
and a general disinterest,
a wellness coach recommended tapping exercises
to refresh the nerve centres,
a physician prescribed vitamins
to address latent deficiencies,
and a well-meaning friend suggested
frequent coffee runs to stay upbeat.
All these practices had little to no impact.
I remained aloof and unstimulated,
gathering impressions,
without filters or biases,
like a faded grey trough
collecting raindrops and grime.
An unlikely cure came through
motley photographs
lying semi-conspicuously
beneath obsolete folders and trinkets.
The people in them
were askew and bleached,
but their charm remained alive
even after years of wear.
I had hoped one of them
would text or call, but in vain.
I finally caved and teared up—
the loveliness of the past,
meant to cajole and coddle,
left me by the curb,
and sped away to the future.
