Here is everything you need to know about the enigmatic drifter who founded the famous arts collective Los Decepcionados in southern Mexico, and then burned it to the ground. In verse, essay, and found horror, the sordid saga of Lefty Smith’s tumultuous visit to the Land of the Sun lurches back into the light of day.
I first came to Gee’s writing through his interesting book, The Penult, and his latest, Left in the Lurch, doesn’t disappoint. It’s a highly original and often humorous triptych of poetry, prose, and a play script centering on the shenanigans of a speaker, named Gee like the author, and a British ne’er-do-well named Lefty. Together they conspire to create an imaginary arts collective in Southern Mexico. A one-act play, THE VIZHAY INN, about the 1959 murders of a ski party of Soviet students, also figures in the mix.
Gee is fearless and funny. He tramples over taboos while avoiding the poseur attitude that sometimes accompanies such efforts. The result is invigorating. Definitely recommended.

From the lascivious and debauched mind that brought you The Penult, Colin Gee is back with a tale in verse of fast friendship on a wild up, down, and sideways ride. Navigate overgrown garden parties with the boys as they discuss literary world domination, as Lefty offers free advice on shitting your pants, stealing another’s girl, or why punctuation, grammar, and spelling are of no concern and what an editor is for. Pour something pleasurable into your glass and sit back and enjoy the roast.
