The Battle of the Frogs by Damon Hubbs

The Battle of the Frogs

Dímelo cantando, in the year of our Lord
I pack my heart in ice, drink gin
the quartermaster plays hoyito at every bar
in the Dominican. The sportswriter writes
a poem about crashing into the shores of fame
and when I tell Lulu about the Battle of the Frogs
she shoots me a look that says
all you New Englanders are alike.

Coleridge counts the feral dogs at every bar in the Dominican.
Dímelo cantando, in the year of our Lord
the boys sharpen machetes, lek mating, going flatbed.
Buying gasoline out of Coke bottles
they speak on background, hit pieces and hatchet jobs
dame dato. We watch Pedro’s changeup float like Ophelia
on a broken teevee. In the blueness of the noon office
the sun bares its gold teeth.

Love is like a black worm in a coach-box.
She sleeps in hair rollers. Now we’re getting somewhere
says the sportswriter. Dirty linens and flies on mangos.
Dímelo cantando, in the year of our Lord
the kids play sugarball with broken bats
going, going, GONE. We bang our desks to see them out
who said the high ones die? Over breakfast
he calls himself the lost genius.

The murderer at the door kept us up all night.
It’s a fuck me, Doris of a story. Young rebels used to be sexy
says Lulu. Still, we’re pursuing happiness.
I tell Coleridge that in journalism
a dog’s cock is another name for an exclamation mark.
He smiles and orders a round of drinks.
A frog croaks like a singing butler
, in the year of our Lord.
