VALENTINE’S DAY & DAVID by J.R. Solonche

VALENTINE’S DAY

A silhouette is
the only part
of a lover that
never grows old.

We are all just
pilgrims in
a cathedral
made of sugar.

The golden ribbon
on the red box
is the bandage for
the golden wound.

DAVID

The first thing – or the second thing –
you notice is his right hand, which is
far too large, as if the stone were still
trying to grow even after Michelangelo
had gone home for the day. But there’s
a good reason. This Goliath-sized David
is meant to be viewed from far below,
so the exaggerated features are needed
for visibility. It also symbolizes David’s
biblical nickname ‘manu fortis’ (strong
of hand) and highlights his readiness for
the fight. And the furrow in his brow,
that small ripple of stone, well, that
looks exactly like the expression my 5’7”
neighbor wears when he’s trying to
parallel park his behemoth of a truck.
Anyway, David isn’t thinking about
the sling. He’s just wondering if the light
will ever change so he can finally blink.
