Tall Tale
I lived on Big Mountain
in a hole in the ground
(I had a hole in my head
but that’s a different story).
The woman made cherry pies
And left them at the hole.
We were not speaking for quite some time,
rather we communicated only via
our own sign language.
Pies were a part of this sign language.
There I was,
spitting cherry stones on the ground
when a beautiful buck
graced these backwoods.
I didn’t have nothing but bird-shot,
so I eyed those cherry pits
and loaded ‘em up
And as quick as I could muster fired
straight at the buck’s head–
He darted back,
a little stunned,
I’d got him,
But the stones didn’t do much.
He looked at me.
I looked at him.
Then off he ran.
A year later,
I was out of the hole
and back at the cabin.
The woman and I
were speaking again.
The very same buck
entered the meadow –
How do I know
He was the same?
A cherry tree was growing straight out of his head.
P.s. this story is real and actually happened.
