‘Slowly Slowly, Catchee Monkey’ and 2 more by Lynn White

Slowly Slowly, Catchee Monkey

‘Bitten off more than you can chew again,’
she said dismissively.
What she didn’t know,
what she couldn’t know
was that I’d barely started yet.
Success comes slowly
and I was patient.
The right heads would roll in the end.

I have quite a bite.

Lead Leads

Is it a quirk of the English language
that ‘lead’ – go forward
stay in front
be the leader
of the pack,
the country,
whatever
and ‘lead’ – the metal
sinks into the abyss
as low as it can get.
Perhaps that’s where leaders lead us
ultimately
hanging on
a plumb line
to the depths
and will we have plump plums for tea
down there
in the abyss.
I doubt it.

Home Fires

Gather round!
Gather round
the hearth
it’s a cosy place
if the fire is burning
and we’ll keep it burning
never fear
the flames.
Gather round
to watch them flaring
back to life
leaping
and lapping
from the once cooling embers,
watch the shapes and shades
flickering
dancing
alight
alive,
a living fire.
Gather round,
to watch it burning.
