it’s a field trip day and we’re down by the strand looking for starfish
where the seaweed and the waves make asterisks of themselves
upon the shore while the other kids jostle and nudge before the chaperones
i ask James (6) if he believes ‘god’ made all of this : the trees the sand
the sun the popsicles we just ate he says sure in the exuberant way kids do when they
haven’t thought something through okay i say and how did god create this?
he eyes some of the seafoam the jettisoned condom (used) that must have floated in from one of
