What’s Missing from the Missing and 1 more by John Grey

THE GORKO’S MISSING! SELECTION FOR 14-20 OCTOBER

WHAT’S MISSING FROM THE MISSING

Would it disturb you to know
that how much I miss you
can be momentarily numbed by
the cool taste of a scoop
of macadamia ice-cream on the tongue.

Your absence is not as linear
as I once believed.
If it were a radio broadcast,
then the sighting of a scarlet tanager
would be static,
likewise a passage from ‘Young Werther.’

I might even get a dog
and just imagine how much
the licks of unconditional love
could sidetrack the conditional kind.

MISSING WEDDING RING, FOUND AT LAST

Found where?
In the long grass, you say.
Beside the lake.
A wedding ring of all things.
They don’t slip off so easily.
A ring like that
must be jerked free
then tossed some place
that devours such symbols.
A marriage can just walk off
from the scene of its disaster
and reconvene in apologies
back in the conjugal bedroom.
But that gold band’s another story.
Nothing bigger than the rite of marriage.
Nothing tinier than its bric-a-brac.
If it was the marriage
tossed into the long grass
beside the lake,
then before you could say
‘I’m sorry’,
it’d be found again.
But a ring…
they were lucky that a crow
didn’t steal it.
Or a curious squirrel.
But it was a small boy,
a little girl, who discovered it
while playing.
A couple like you two
could do a lot worse
than be a small boy, a little girl,
and go play some place.
