1.
Walking down the street past bystanders’ faces,
I see dismay’s and skepticism’s shadow.
I’m just searching for someone I can get wasted
With or while away the time before tomorrow.
I have multicolored treasures in my pockets,
A wallet in my backpack with a couple banknotes.
Being drunk, I’m spouting off unearthly nonsense—
Some moments I have zero need to interest folks.
My head. Strong tea. I’ve caught a cold, I’m guessing.
I’ll call you up…get on over here fast.
I for one won’t. I forgot what your address is.
Also…come on: you can loan me some cash.
I ask you not to shout that I drink an awful lot.
I’m just doing a limited-time binge.
It’s all for art’s sake…I’ve got my eyes on my route,
With my right hand propping up my chin.
Transit stop…you see me all the way back home.
I’m telling you: ‘Thank you…you’ve once again saved me.’
You buy me tea, knowing that my kettle broke—
But you won’t spot me a just-in-case penny.

2.
pills don’t make it the least bit easier.
yet again i’ve failed at inner conquest.
they’ve been severe—not mild—outside it’ll now forever,
i’m thinking, be snowy cold and darkness.
i’m freezing. and i’ll not let loose another yell
for help. i’m tired of asking for it.
i’d have waited all winter but there’s no shelter
that’s permanent. unless i just mean transit.
and i’ve abruptly realized that all the best rhymes
were made up in eras that my birth far overshot.
what it means is: yet another battle is a loss.
and, as for the whole war, i have the same thought.

clouds waves and morning sea air
coffee mirror and bed again
out the window it looks kind of cold and damp
i feel like sleep, though. it’s all the same.
disorganization and tangled-up hair
(when i wanted to skyrocket!) it knocks me out
when I felt like arguing, laughing, trying to sing
with my hoarse or even smoky vowels.
tea public administration naps
(i type and delete. my eyes dragging purses)
i might have stood up—or even danced perhaps
but i can only lie here jotting little verses.
3.

There is a version of Iryna Somkina that English speakers generally have not gotten to see. It is the version of Iryna who rhymes in Russian. I have struggled through this other Iryna for a while now. It is easy enough to make a poet like Sergei Esenin rhyme in English when he was in the 1910s and 1920s using strings of odd tropes and now-bizarre, antiquated words in such a way that many, many different ways of being bizarre seem valid. But Iryna is spiritually kin in the poems I am sending to many of the participants in New Sincerity and anglophone Alt Lit: she rhymes and nevertheless her words are generally relatively direct, sincere, and contemporary.
There are a few times in these poems when I simply had to give up on the very blunt and confessional Iryna—all to privilege rhyming, which I have taken as the variable of paramount importance in my task as a translator of Iryna. If Iryna seems to be saying something here that is just a little bit convoluted, it is likely due to my hand as a translator.
All the same, I don’t think that I’ve done anything particularly wrong by reworking Iryna to say:
and i’ve abruptly realized that all the best rhymes
were made up in eras that my birth far overshot.
what it means is: yet another battle is a loss.
and, as for the whole war, i have the same thought.
She could just as easily have said in a free-verse translation: ‘and I have suddenly realized that all the best rhymes someone already thought up long before me. This means, yet another battle is lost, and it seems, the entire war is lost.’
The free verse gets at a version of Iryna who gives voice to a persona who struggles with mental health and who draws catastrophically momentous conclusions about her fate. This Iryna who rhymes is aware of her own ingeniousness and is not merely a fount of confessions. It is just that battle (nominative), war (nominative), and me (genitive) rhyme in Russian but not in English.
