The Casey Girls by Toni Hanner

The Casey Girls

They burned scraps of lace,
the tail of a mouse, a bit of chaw,
composed a ritual of blinding,
who saw them saw only a scrim
of shadow moving quickly
in air freckled with gold.

One without the other, no,
your chisel would bend,
your ax break in half.
Kansas City only winked,
thinking it was all a joke,
until the shooting started.
