A Complicated Dream Told as if Included in Akira Kurosawa’s Final Film, Dreams

Daughter I don’t have, her small outstretched hand,
On the road as four generations:

Mother and grandmother,
And the grandmother stealing her away.

Riding a storm cloud rolling in,
Queen of the Night steals her,

Child’s open mouth frozen against a black
Sky of stars as she disappears. Scene.

And now a wonderful hotel, Scotland heath,
Scotland mist rolling across yellow heather,

Fire in the hearth needing intercession
From a Hindu goddess, Goddess appearing,

Another cloud descends, flame from
Her outstretched hands,

Creating too from her bounty an organ,
Red viscera, a couple who appear.

A couple seeking a child.
Their dog speaks, knows all;

The first love arrives on the road.
Stands in the road, receiving offerings.

Snacks proffered to another woman also.
A hand holding out a tray,

Sterling service, doily. Scene.
Family wealth from the diamond mine,

The maw gaping. Glitter inside. Death.
Blood on the diamonds, glittering.

Everyone is there. Music flows. End. I wish
To return, but am awake and cannot go back. It flows on.
